Shan I seldom venture much out of Sussex but I wish you luck. If you were nearer I could keep you very busy over the summer.

Scott I am in the process of booking several people for multiple events from April right through to October.
Equestrian is a difficult genre to pickup as there are so many variables. Was speaking to a mate and fellow tog tonight who got trampled by a runaway horse indoors on the 3rd January this year. He hasn't done any photography since so there are risks involved.
I had very little technical understanding (of either horses or photography TBH) when I started in equestrian photography nearly 3 years ago now. I was comfortable around horses and I think that confidence and caution is essential. This is how I now earn 90% of my income. I'd be happy for you to come to an event we're photographing to see how you get on. Hunter trials are the easiest as I could park you in front of a fence and get you to shoot each horse as it comes over it. Hopefully you soon get the timing correct and produce saleable images. Showjumping is more problemmatical especially if you are in the ring as you need understanding of the possible lines of travel ( ponies turn on a sixpence), the angles to shoot at and also avoid etc. Dressage and showing are a different dimension again.
Remind me what camera kit you have? Football tournaments are always an option coming into the spring and dog agility is easier and more fun than horses in my opinion. Noisier and faster but an option. I turned down a dog agility show on the 25th April as I have too many other events on that day. Are you setup for onsite printing yet in terms of a genny, gazebo etc?
