Let's not argue people. With 600+ people as members we could easily pay for a logo or better still someone knows someone who can do the job.

Not sure where this is going. Why not just put up the best logos and vote as there are loads being uploaded and nothing moving forward.

THink I hit the wrong buttomn to post, typing in the dark!
As a suggestion, why not open the logo creation as a small design competition in one of the better Design Colleges? Moderators whittle down the entrants to say 5/6 and the society polls the winner?
Whilst we need a logo quickly, it should be for "life" so it pays to spend a bit of time on it as it represents our identity?

Hi Ed Are you assuming that all 600+ are going to pay the membership fee, by my reckoning only around 25% at most will convert to paid membership if site activity is any thing to go by... Alan

I'm sure we could put this job out to tender and get some art student fresh out of college to have a look at this. My logo was designed by the same people who built my website (the strapline was my idea). This logo is going to represent the face and soul of our group and as such must be very carefully considered and implemented by people who know about the art of design. Alas, this rules out a rush job, doing it on the cheap and most of us on this forum.

Which really defines what the importance of a good, well designed logo is all about - it needs to work well in many different applications, and so it needs to work well at a very small size, and very large. Hence the need to keep things relatively simple.
I think Alan's design is getting there, although I think there are one too many colours being used. It seems that the blue is a colour people are asociating with EPS - obviously becuse Mike chose it for the site - so from that point of view I think it would be a good idea to keep it. - Blue and Black.
Logos are always a sticky area, because you cannot please everyone - however the issue here is does it work? Does it do the job? Keeping it simple helps.

I think the logo needs to work without a 'background' colour as we each have our own 'colour schemes' that we use on our websites and stationery. So I would prefer to see a design that stands up well on a transparent background, this can then be included on all our stationery, advertising etc without looking like it had been stuck there by a Blue Peter fanatic.... ..puts head back below the parapit....xx

Ok guys n gals... Coming to this late, I've been on my back for past few days with a slipped disc so am playing catchup.
There seem to be quite a few of us with a background in design, I've done magazine layouts etc.. But the one thing I see is that they all leave the design to the professionals.
That's what I'd recommend. I like Ed and Alan's designs best. Less is more. Simple, clean, etc. A black background in my mind works well
I think we need to take ego out of the equation when it comes to all of this. If we open things up for critique then we should expect criticism. That's what happens with the collaborative process.
If I can get comfy with this back I might try to throw some ideas together, but really do feel that a pro is the best way forward. We promote professionalism wit hin our profession, so the same goes for how we portray the society.
Sorry typing this as I sit in car on way to trade show so not the best post. :)
Just wanted to offer some feedback :)
Later
Geoff
