I was shooting my first solo event this weekend at a dog agility event, at Areana UK last time i was there i was shooting action for someone else but this time i thought i would try portraits, good job i was on my own because i didn't taken much money, i hope it was not because of the quality ?

Gary,

Your portraits were dreadful: dreadfully good that is! I wouldn't be down-hearted with the take - it is clearly the customers and not the quality of the photos.

THe photos are good but I fear the answer is right there in your post?

You were there to shoot action but decided to give portraits a go..Unfortunately you audience and customer were/are not fully "primed" and expectant of this late introduction to the service.

So do them again, again and again...Major on them and get the market well aware beforehand, pre-book portraits by offering a discount pre-booking on organisers websites or whatever it takes.

It will make a huge difference..

No i was asked to shoot portraits, action shots there are really hard with the poor lighting this was last time

The only place i had to shoot was the bar area so i had to think on my feet how to use the area best

Sorry misread your initial post probably...

However, I made the point about "awareness" outa experience and wondered if it was at all valid.

I don't see a lot wrong with these pics, make my mut look like a right ruffian..!

I still think it's a lot to do with the pre-event legwork....

Very nice shots, like the background and lighting. It looks like dogs were being put on a high "staging", were owners happy about that as I wouldn't dare put either my collie or my nutty springer higher than about a 1foot staging.

I agree with Drew, indoor agility or one day outdoor agility I have found portraiture not as popular because dog are not groomed plus they are hyped up. Two day events are different as they have time to go back to their caravans for clean and brush up.

I only had about 3 people ask about action shots, usually there is about 400+ dogs but there was probably only a 1/4 of that, i didn't mind it was fun and the lady the sets up the dog shows is a good friend

Thank's for all the replies and help, this is probably only a one off i would rather help others because i don't have the set up and don't want to be doing events every weekend i'd rather be out on my motobikes
So if anyone needs a hand action shots are no problem http://gsgary.smugmug.com/Animals/Dog-V ... 1528_uu6ZX (http://gsgary.smugmug.com/Animals/Dog-Vagas-Ashbourne/8541528_uu6ZX)
