Printers for Event Photographers

There is a reasonable selection of dye-sub (correctly known as Digital Dye Thermal Transfer - D2T2 or Thermal Dye Sublimation) printers available for event photography which can be split in to 2 size groups - the majority print up to 6"x 9" and a further small selection that print up to 8" x 12". Amongst these are sheet fed and roll fed machines. Roll fed machines require less paper changes and suffer much less from dust issues.
Unfortunately there is no one supplier that sells all currently available models so it is often difficult to obtain an oversight of the different models and their capabilities. To this end I have compiled a list of all the models that are currently available and would be used by event photographers. (Please inform me if you know of any printers that you feel should be included, models that have been discontinued or any mistakes made)
How to choose your printer
-
- Do you require full frame prints i.e. 9" x 6" and 12" x 8" from a DSLR?
- Who is going to carry your printer?
- Can the printer produce prints fast enough?
- Media price (how much per print)
- Do you require a MAC driver?
- What support, backup and warranty is available?
- Is it part of a system i.e. Click System
Details of models with print sizes, speed, weight, dimensions and some other features follow. What is missing is price because these constantly change and there can be many hundreds of pounds difference between machines that appear to have the same specification. The best thing to do is make a short list and then phone around the suppliers for prices where again there can be big price differences for the same model.
